Hardware, software, Engineered

There seems to be a great buzz around Exalogic and Exadata - the latest offering of 'complete' solution products from Oracle. What makes it so special? As most people know, it combines hardware and software. Is it just that ? I would disagree. I consider the most outstanding factor is the 'Engineered'. If we just throw bunch of hardware and software into a rack, it does not automatically start super performing. What makes Exalogic, outstanding in performance is the engineering that has gone into it. Oracle has optimized the hardware and the software to obtain the maximum 'juice' out of it.

What is in the Box ?

Exalogic Machines comes with three different Hardware architecture options - quarter rack, half rack or full rack. All of these architectures have the same components but would differ in quantity.

The table below depicts the hardware components for the three architectures that are available today

Get the box into your data center (Ensure you have the right power outlet and cooling system !) , power it on and you have the ultimate computing machine !
Of course, the hardware alone cannot do the magic. You need the software to fire it up. What do we have in an Exalogic Box .

  • Operating System - Linux or Solaris (based on the flavor that you purchased !)

  • Cloud Software

  • WebLogic Server - Optimized over the compute nodes

  • Coherence - For ultimate caching of data to be used across the nodes

  • Fusion Middleware components - SOA Suite, WebCenter Suite , Identity Management Suite can be installed and configured for the ultimate performance experience.

This covers just the overview.. More to follow.. the architecture of the Compute Node.. the Infiniband .. Oracle WebCenter suite optimized on Exalogic.. Exalogic and Exadata : Linked together for Super performance..
